Identifying Nike Products Using Labels/Tags: A Guide

Many inquiries regarding Nike products involve determining the model, year of production or place of purchase. Without detailed product knowledge or access to Nike catalogs, identifying this information can be difficult. Here's a guide to help you identify and find Nike products using labels.

General Considerations:

  • This guide is not intended to authenticate products, determine their value, or understand dates on tags.
  • The effectiveness of these tips depends on having the product or photos of the necessary labels.
  • The information provided is general and may vary depending on the age of the product, region, etc.

Footwear Identification
All modern Nike footwear includes a size label that provides key information such as size, style code (SKU) and production dates. The format and location of these labels may vary, but they always contain the same key information.

Here's a detailed description of what to look out for:

Size Label Components:

    • Size: Indicates the shoe size.
    • Style Code (SKU): Typically a 9-digit number, where the first 6 digits identify the model and the last 3 digits identify the color version.
    • Production Dates: A date range indicating the production period.
Nike Size Label Example (Mid 2010's):
    • US size: 10
    • UK Size: 9
    • EUR size: 44
    • CM Size: 28
    • SKU: 123456-789
    • Production Dates: 08/14/14 - 10/23/14

Steps to Identify Footwear:

  1. Find Size Tag:
    1. It is usually located on the inside of the tongue or the inside of the shoe.
  2. Identify SKU:
    1. The SKU is key to identifying the exact model and color version.
    2. The first 6 digits refer to the model number and the last 3 digits refer to the color.
  3. Search SKU Online:
    1. Use search engines or specific sneaker databases to find information about the shoe model, color version and year of production.
    2. Sites such as Nike's official website, sneaker forums, or retail sites can provide detailed information and photos.

Sample Search:
For a Nike shoe with SKU 123456-789, enter "Nike 123456-789" in the search bar. The results should include the model name, color version, year of release and often photos.

Clothes Tips:
For many Nike clothing items (especially vintage), knowing the original product name is unlikely to help you find it with a simple Google search. For example, many older products have simple names like "Nylon lined jacket" or "Training warm-up pant." Modern ones may have names like "Therma-Fit Running LS Top" or "Dri-Fit Elemental Tee".

  1. Search by description:
    • For most older items that aren't immediately recognizable or fashionable (e.g. some Jordan jerseys from the '80s and '90s), the only way to find something is to describe the look in a search engine (e.g. "white Nike jacket with green stripes and large logo").
  2. Washing label (washtag):
    • In the case of modern Nike clothing, the laundry label can contain valuable information. This label is usually located on the lower inside hem of the garment. It may vary in layout, but there is usually a small white square tag underneath larger wash tags.

Similar to shoe size labels, this tag contains size, style code, and date information. For example:

SP (Spring) – 17 (2017) – 08 (August) – 11 (November).
In this case, the product was produced between August and November 2016 for a spring 2017 release. In other cases, months may fall within the same year as a season/release.

Tip:

  • SP = Spring; SS or S = Summer; FA or F = Autumn; HO or H = Winter.
  • The next line is the size - here XL.
  • The next one is the style code – 776095-101.
  • It can be searched directly, which sometimes reveals the exact item, including photos and name.
  • Unfortunately, the code provided here only returns one unnamed product - a white Dri-Fit sweatshirt.

    Old Tag Style

Unlike most brands, Nike operates a four-season system per year. The following markings indicate in which season a given product was released:

    • SP - Spring (Spring) - from January to March (sometimes marked as S)
    • SU - Summer (Summer) - from April to June (sometimes marked as U)
    • FA - Fall - from July to September (sometimes marked as F)
    • HO - Holidays - from October to December (sometimes marked as H)

Our example uses an older serial code that only shows the letter F for 'Autumn'. The next digits indicate the year of release, in this case 2 means 2002. In the case of older Nike products, you sometimes have to guess which decade is the correct one, which is why we have shown the periods above with labels on the neck.

At the end of the 2000s, the serial code changed - the first two digits after the season code indicate the exact year of production. For example, SP20 means Spring 2020.

The four digits after the year and season code indicate the exact production date of the product. In the example shown, 0408 means April 8.

Most Nike products will follow this rule if they include a small serial code tag. Check under the wash care label to find this code.

    Accessories Tips:

For products such as hats, gloves, sunglasses, etc., similar procedures to clothing will apply. In most cases, there will at least be a style code available on the tag, such as on the hem inside the gloves or hat.
I hope this information will help, or at least encourage you to look for information about your products yourself. If something is unclear or you need help identifying a product, I will be happy to explain or help. Good luck in your search!
